Sowing the seed: Incentives and Motivations for Sharing Research Data, a researcher's perspective

Sowing the seed: Incentives and Motivations for Sharing Research Data, a researcher's perspective

Cover of the Study Incentives and Motivations for Sharing Research Data

This qualitative study, commissioned by Knowledge Exchange, has gathered evidence, examples and opinions on current and future incentives for research data sharing from the researchers’ point of view, in order to provide recommendations for policy and practice development on how best to incentivize data access and re-use.

Incentives and motivations ask for development of a data infrastructure with rich context where research data, papers and other outputs or resources are jointly available within a single data resource. Different types of data sharing and research disciplines need to be acknowledged.

This study helps stakeholders to understand and act.

Data sharing reports from Europe

Two reports were recently released in Europe that might be of interest:

- The EU funded RECODE project released their final report.
The project was funded to come up with Policy recommendations for open access to research data. They did this by investigating five disciplines in particular: physics, health, bioengineering, environment and archaeology.

The other report is a report from Knowledge Exchange, Sowing the seed: Incentives and motivations for sharing research data, a researcher's perspective
To investigate the incentives and motivations they approached researchers in arts and humanities, social sciences, biomedicine, chemistry and biology.
The report can be found at:

Sowing the seed: Incentives and motivations for sharing research data, a researcher’s perspective

Knowledge Exchange have just released a study on incentives and motivations for researchers to share research data based on case studies with researchers from 5 disciplines. They also looked into career stages and implications for willingness to share data.

Some interesting recommendations for research funders, institutions and repositories eg
- Provide data resources that combine data and related rich context such as publications and other outputs
-  Develop national registries of research data that link to journals, repositories, etc.

But there are a lot more and worth having a look at.
