CoreTrustSeal Certification Launched
CoreTrustSeal Certification Launched
Tokyo, Japan and The Hague, Netherlands – 11 September 2017
The ICSU World Data System (ICSU-WDS) and the Data Seal of Approval (DSA) are pleased to announce the launch of a new certification organization: CoreTrustSeal.
The CoreTrustSeal Board offers all interested data repositories a core-level certification based on the DSA–WDS Core Trustworthy Data Repositories Requirements catalogue and procedures. CoreTrustSeal Data Repository certification replaces the DSA certification and the WDS certification of Regular Members.
The CoreTrustSeal is a community-based nonprofit organization promoting sustainable and trustworthy data infrastructures. It is governed by a Standards and Certification Board consisting of members drawn from the Assembly of Reviewers (by election) and the wider repositories stakeholders (appointed).
‘We are driven by our commitments to offer professional certification tools and services to data repositories and to support our voluntary qualified reviewers to conduct audits under optimal conditions’ said Mustapha Mokrane, Chair of the ad hoc CoreTrustSeal Standards and Certification Board. CoreTrustSeal is developing a sustainable business model and as an initial step, will start charging a modest fee to cover administrative costs as of January 2018.
The CoreTrustSeal certification is envisioned as the initial level in a global framework for repository certification that also includes the extended and formal levels. Ultimately, the CoreTrustSeal will endeavour to provide core-level certification for other research entities such as data services and software.

New article: Borgman et al: Knowledge infrastructures in science: data, diversity, and digital libraries
Knowledge infrastructures in science: data, diversity, and digital libraries
Borgman, Christine L.; Darch, Peter T.; Sands, Ashley E.; Pasquetto, Irene V.; Golshan, Milena S.; Wallis, Jillian C.; Traweek, Sharon
International Journal on Digital Libraries, Vol. 16 Issue 3-4 – 2015: 207 - 227
10.1007/s00799-015-0157-z
Digital libraries can be deployed at many points throughout the life cycles of scientific research projects from their inception through data collection, analysis, documentation, publication, curation, preservation, and stewardship. Requirements for digital libraries to manage research data vary along many dimensions, including life cycle, scale, research domain, and types and degrees of openness. This article addresses the role of digital libraries in knowledge infrastructures for science, presenting evidence from long-term studies of four research sites.
Examples are presented of the challenges in designing digital libraries and knowledge infrastructures to manage and steward research data.

CSIRO Milestone Day - Australia's new Marine Research Vessel arrives in Hobart
Today (Tuesday 9 September) is a milestone day for CSIRO as Australia’s new Marine National Facility research vessel
Investigator arrives in Hobart.
The Marine National Facility is owned and operated
by CSIRO on behalf of the nation, and Toni Moate, Executive Director of
CSIRO’s Future Research Vessel Project, will be on site
to welcome the ship to Hobart following its departure from
Singapore on 24 August.
With almost $20 million worth of scientific
equipment, the 94m ship is capable of mapping the sea floor at any
depth, collecting weather data 20km into the atmosphere, analysing fish
species with sonar and revealing the composition of the
sea bed 100m below the sea floor. During the next five months the wharf
will be a hive of activity for the final fit out of scientific
equipment on board the ship and CSIRO will organise the official Welcome to
Port event during this time.
You can follow the action on CSIRO’s Twitter account @csironews and by using the hashtag #RVInvestigator or watch video of the voyage from Singapore and find out more on the Investigator blog at http://csirofrvblog.com/
