The Research Data Alliance (RDA) and the International Council for Science World Data System (ICSU-WDS) announce a new global framework for linking publications and datasets. The Scholix framework -- Scholarly Link Exchange -- represents a set of aspirational principles and practical guidelines to support a global information ecosystem around links between scholarly literature and research data.
The framework aims for a seamless exchange of information about literature and related data, thereby facilitating re-use, reproducibility, and transparent evaluation of science. The Scholix framework consists of a conceptual and information model, with standards, guidelines and options for encoding and exchange protocols. The three core objectives of the framework are:
  1. Increase visibility and discoverability of data and articles
  2. Place data in context to enable re-use
  3. Support credit attribution mechanisms

The Scholix framework is the output of a working group led by RDA and ICSU-WDS and a number of key global players in research information including, among others, Crossref, DataCite, OpenAIRE, PANGAEA, International STM Association, Australian National Data Service, and Elsevier.

Elsevier and the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) Announce Data Linking

Elsevier articles on ScienceDirect link directly with largest archive of behavioural and social science research data, ICPSR
Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, and ICPSR, a leader in providing curated research data to the behavioural and social science community, today announced that they have implemented two-way linking between research articles and datasets.
Over 400 Elsevier journals will offer direct linking options with datasets in ICPSR. These behavioural and social science datasets become discoverable through corresponding research articles on ScienceDirect. This allows researchers to access underlying research data immediately while reading the research paper, and potentially reuse the data for their own experiments. Vice versa, research articles on ScienceDirect can also be accessed directly from within the ICPSR datasets providing additional information to place the data into context.
